Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.
The key to the Psalm is affliction and pain, you have to know you have sinned and feel the pain of not doing what God has taught us to do. To ask for forgiveness without remorse is not really asking for forgiveness , but asking God to just re-enforce our decision that was a sin.
I hate to say it but in today's world I see this daily as people think they can commit a sin and just ask for forgiveness without any remorse or pain for the damage the sin has done. Think of how both candidates acted and the media for that point in the last election and you will see a vivid example of this. I will call you a name and accuse you of something I know is not true , but expect everyone to forgive me , because I do other things so well. This is idiocy, God does not care about the form but the substance and you have no real remorse in what you have done. Do not expect that sin to be forgiven.
That being sad forgiveness is not time constrained , if in the future , you come to truly have remorse for a sin and ask for Gods forgiveness it will come as easily as when you did it. Because God loves us and he is a God of second chances. Amen
