The Meaning of a Pledge, Vow, Commitment, Contract and Covenant Part II
The
Good Lord has placed on my heart a need to look at the meaning of
several types of interactions between people and people and the Lord. It
is important to understand what level of input you are expressing and
agreeing to. This will be a several part blog looking at the meaning in
our present terms and how it is used in the bible. So lets begin and I
know you will see the value of this shortly.
Contract as defined in the Miriam Webster Dictionary :
a binding agreement between two or more persons or parties; especially: one legally enforceableb: a business arrangement for the supply of goods or services at a fixed price <make parts on contract>c: the act of marriage or an agreement to marry
a document describing the terms of a contract
As used in the Bible : It is not used in the Bible anywhere, the word contract had no meaning in the world during the times of the New and Old testaments.
This was especially interesting to me to learn as today it is involved all the while in every part of our society, yet back then there was no such thing. Maybe we should think about that longer.
COVENANT as described by the dictionary:
1: a usually formal, solemn, and binding agreement :compact
2a: a written agreement or promise usually under seal between two or more parties especially for the performance of some actionb: the common-law action to recover damages for breach of such a contract
As defined by the bible:
The word is used 280 times and always refers to the agreement between God and Man , it is always permanent and set down in some way.
And I will make an everlasting covenant
with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I
will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.
Here we see that the most binding agreement that one can have is with the Lord and he sets this as his most important agreement also. So we should when we look at what we need to do to please the Lord to the Covenant he has with us.
I hope this has made the importance of the contracts that we do everyday (little importance if none to God) and the covenants we reach with the Lord and how these are what he looks at everyday.
