Many years ago my Dad took my brother and I fishing in a place called
Mays Point. This is part of the Erie Canal system and had great catfish
fishing. Of course we went at night with a lantern and visibility was
limited. Well when I was a kid my dad always wanted us to leave out
lines alone when we casted out as we tended to like to cast and not
fish. Well this night I was especially good and left my line
in the water for about 2-3 hours. Dad had found a great spot and Moe
and he were catching fish right and left . I on the other hand did not
even get a bite for the whole time. Finally Dad said Chuck what is the
issue do the fish just not like you or what and he took the lantern and
stood up. Well my line was stuck in a tree and the bait was about 12
inches above the water.Dad began to laugh and almost tipped over the
boat. Ever since that day to the day he died he would always ask me if I
was fishing in the trees.
At first when dad would ask me if I was fishing in the trees, I
thought he was picking on me.I thought he was saying I was stupid . But
he later told me it was because I had such faith in something that I
would let every body else get the glory and wait
for my glory moment. He told me that he was so proud of me because that
was something he didn't think he could ever teach us. A few weeks
before Dad past he was kind of out of it a lot and he said to me "Don't
forget to go fishing in the trees". Well after Dad died I realized he
was telling me not to be said but believe in something you can't see or
touch with all your heart and you will get that glory moment.
Thanks Dad you showed me the definition of faith and how to use it.
